Virtually everyone has spare change that they don’t know what to do with. Often discarded, the once infamous one cent coin became the focus of a fundraising effort in aid of Zoo Negara.
The students of Smart Reader Kids® centres nationwide collected a total of RM 3,252 worth of one-cent coins over a period of three months. Student representatives from Smart Reader Kids® centres in Desa Aman Puri, USJ 9 and Taman Rashna, the 3 schools to collect the most amount of coins, were invited to hand over the coins to zoo officials.
The children were also taken on an educational tour of the entire zoo, courtesy of the zoo’s Education Department. The tour involved observations of animals and physical contact with them at the petting zoo located within the Children’s World section.
Zoo Negara is currently home to 400 animals, which include indigenous species such as tigers, bearded pigs, rhinoceros, civet cats, and orang utans.
Zoo Negara is primarily based on the open zoo concept. Animals are housed in landscaped, open air enclosures that are similar to their natural habitats. Not only does this aid the well being of the animals but also gives visitors a better understanding of the animals habitat in the wild.
Due to the enormous cost incurred in providing quality care for these animals, the zoo officials are constantly on the look out for sponsors, and welcomes donations from corporate organisations as well as the general public.
Community service projects such as this one are continuously organised to reaffirm our commitment towards society and to instill a sense of charity and awareness among the children.
26TH May 2004
It was a sunny Tuesday afternoon when a mammoth gathering of more than 7,000 enthusiastic children, parents and teachers congregated at Mines Wonderland to mark Smart Reader Kids®’ Day 2004.
Parents, children, teachers and even staff from franchisor Smart Reader® Worldwide Sdn Bhd. began filing in from as early as 3pm to mark the event that was specially organised to promote Smart Reader Kids® - a day synonymous for togetherness and unity.
Parents and children began whisking around the theme park, checking out the various attractions available — all of which they had unlimited access to under a special agreement between Smart Reader® Worldwide Sdn Bhd and Mines Wonderland.
The official launch began with a percussion band performance by the children of Smart Reader Kids® (Wangsa Maju), who entertained the crowd with popular tunes in English such as When the Saints Came Marching In, Mary Had A Little Lamb and the Mayflower Song and a Chinese favourite, Ker Ren Lai.
The little ones, all aged between three and six looked smart in their red and white uniforms, wielding their melodeons, ring bells, triangles, castanets, rhythm sticks and wood blocks.
Next came the children of Smart Reader Kids® centres in USJ9 & Bandar Sunway to show off their stuff. They awed the crowd with their rhyme recitals and rendition of Mari Bersama, Care Kids and their school song, Smart Reader Kids Way.
They performed confidently to loud cheers and clapping, their gaiety filling the air as they danced, prompting the crowd to sing a long with them.
Special appearances by Smart Reader® mascots, Jack and his conscience, Smart, thrilled the already excited children by autographing copies of the Smart Reader® Love & Care and Fun With Numbers music CD’s that were on sale.
Rounding up the official launch was a short speech by Dr. Richard Ong, CEO of Smart Reader Worldwide Sdn. Bhd.
Nine Smart Reader Kids® children also took this opportunity to represent their nationwide counterparts when they presented Dr. Ong with nine hearts, each with a symbol of appreciation for a wonderful learning experience — a gesture that brought a roaring round of applause from parents and teachers.
Parents and children from as far away as Johor attended this fun filled annual event. Other noted guests included Smart Reader®’s partners from China.
