Four-year
old Chong De Wei just wont stop talking the minute you start talking to him.
He is not a hyperactive child in nature. Neither is he a chatter-box. He just
loves to express himself through spoken words and interact with others. Being
one of the youngest students at Smart Reader Kids® Sri
Petaling, De Wei is not only good in speaking English, but is also showing
his capabilities in writing, singing, and dancing.
"My name is Chong De Wei. I am four years old. My hobbies are swimming,
reading, dancing and singing. My ambition is to become a pilot," replied
De Wei in English when he was asked to give a brief introduction of himself.
Started preschool when he was two and a half years old, De Wei enjoys attending
preschool as much as he enjoys learning. He expressed that he likes to do coloring,
learn Mandarin, and meet his friends in school.
According to De Wei's mother, Rowena Hu, De Wei hardly made any effort to
speak when he was two years old. " I had to make a visit to the doctor
to check on this," relates Rowena, who is also a preschool teacher for Smart
Reader Kids®. Rowena, who is afraid that her son might not be able
to reach his potential when he grows up. She was worried that her child will
develop low self-esteem and become introvert when he reaches adulthood. This
explains the reason why she sent De Wei to preschool as early as two years
old.
"I believe that the Smart Reader® Creative
Teaching Methodology has helped him a lot in opening his mind, expanding
his scope of thinking and encouraging him to express himself through many
different ways," said Rowena. Rowena thinks that when children mingle
around with other children in school, they are able to open up their self-confidence
and self-worth. To her, teaching the children to think creatively nd critically
starting from their formative years will help them to be independent and
disciplined as they grow up.
"...expanding his scope of thinking and encouraging
him to express himself through many different ways"
De Wei was one of the Smart Reader Kids® of the
Year 2004 finalists, who had also been selected to take part in last
year's Smart Reader Kids® of the Year and Talent
Search Contest (Individual Event 3-4 years old). He danced and sand
the song entitled "Hop and Flap" in both English and Mandarin versions,
which was also performed at the "Magical Extravaganza" Concert
2004, a record -breaking event-" Longest Performance by Children," recorded
in the Malaysia Book Of Records last November.
Besides taking part in school activities and events, four-year old De Wei
also participates in other out of school events, such as singing competitions.
With an interest in stage performances, De Wei has never been afraid of standing
and performing in front of a crowd. Having a good memory is an added advantage
for De Wei as he is able to memorise the lyrics after listening to a song few
times. Same goes to his story-telling skill. People who have seen him on stage
were amused by his ability and confidence on stage performances.
At the Smart Reader Kids® Sri Petaling concert
last year, De Wei played the role of Little Michael in the "Peter Pan" stage
play and sang the song, "I Won't Grow Up." During this interview
session, he voluntarily sang a Mandarin song, "Chai Shen Dao" and
told a short story on the "101 Dalmations."
