Can
you remember what was it like to attend preschool or kindergarten? Now, have
you ever wondered what is it like for your own child to experience early learning
in today’s changing trend of early childhood education, which stresses
more on smart-and-fun learning? As every child is unique in his or her own way,
there is always a need to access them individually and understand their needs
in order to assist them in performing their best in various areas.
It is a normal phenomenon for children to have fear of attending school due
to the natural sense of insecurity with their unfamiliar surroundings. Therefore,
building high self-esteem and creating the interest to learn among the children
are important for them to be able to interact spontaneously and adapt to their
learning environment comfortably before the learning process can take place effectively.
Constant communication with the child is a crucial need to better understand
them better and look at things from their perspectives. Ow Ruo Yu, aged 5, a
student from Smart Reader Kids® Taipan 2 shares some of her learning experience
as one of the new generation preschoolers.
“I love talking and playing hide-n-seek with my friends,” said
Ruo Yu who started preschool at the age of two. According to Ruo Yu, she never
fails to attend school because she enjoys being in school and meeting her friends.
When asked on her favourite teachers, she giggled and named a list of them. “I
like all my teachers because they teach me a lot of things,” expressed
Ruo Yu, whose favourite subjects are Mathematics and Mandarin.
Like many other children, Ruo Yu loves group activities in-and-out of class
where teachers and students have no barriers of communication and children are
given ample opportunities to express themselves confidently and creatively through
many ways. Smart Reader Kids® educators believe that the development of
high self-confidence among the kids can be gained through their active participation
in class as well as the positive encouragement and recognition shown by the teachers.
According to Mary Lok, Ruo Yu’s mother, she is happy with her child’s
progress and interest in learning new things. She feels that her daughter learns
a lot from school, especially learning to be independent and sharing with others.
“The reason why I got her started with preschool as early as 2 years
old is because I want her to start learning early, mingle around with other kids
and learn to share with others. Being the only child in the family, I’m
afraid that she might develop a low self-esteem and become very self-centered.
Now, I’m very happy that she is learning positively and actively involved
in many activities organised by the school,” relates Mary.
Mary also expressed that her child is very curious about things happening
around her. “She is always asking me questions whenever she can think of
one. So, I always have to stay prepared with the answers. I cannot tell her that
I do not know the answers, she’ll never be satisfied and keep on asking
me. I believe that the school has much influence on her curiosity of finding
out things. I find that it is a good exposure for her as she is able to learn
a lot from the school and not afraid of clarifying doubts whenever she does not
understand things,” explained Mary.
"I’m very happy that she is learning positively
and actively involved in many activities organised by the school"Through
the Smart Reader® Creative Teaching Methodology, Smart Reader
Kids® educators believe that this method plays a crucial role in developing
each child’s learning capabilities as they construct their own ideas about
the environment around them to satisfy their impulse of curiosity. This creative
methodology will allow teachers to communicate with the kids in a fun and artistic
way thus, encouraging the children to give feedback in the same creative manner
that will expand their thinking capacity.
At Smart Reader Kids®, a child is treated as an individual and is nurtured
to become a creative and thinking person with potential for success. This effort
will eventually help to shape those young minds into becoming future leaders,
who are not only equipped with the knowledge and experience, but also moulded
with pleasant character and behaviour.
Ow Ruo Yu was one of the Smart Reader Kids® of the Year 2004 finalists,
who has been selected to take part in last year’s Smart Reader Kids® of
the Year and Talent Search Contest (Individual Event 3 – 4 years old).
Her first performance that night was a story telling session where she amused
the audience with her story entitled “Never Count Your Chicks Before They
Hatch.” Her facial expressions and body language complimented her style
of telling the story. Her talent and confidence on stage was also creatively
and confidently displayed during her dance routine that evening.
Ruo Yu also participated in the record-breaking event - “Longest Performance
by Children” which was recorded in the Malaysia Book Of Records last November.
