At
the age of five, Lean Bien Coronel Abungin may just be another pre-schooling
child, who enjoys going to school and spending time playing with her friends
in school. What makes her stands out from the rest is her self-confidence and
social skills. Coming from a totally different background, Lean started her first
pre-formal education with Smart Reader Kids® Pantai Hillpark at the age
of three, where she learns beyond alphabet and numbers.
“I love all the subjects in school!” Lean excitedly replied when
she was asked on her favourite subject in school. She also expressed that she
loves to attend school as her mother sends her to the Smart Reader Kids® centre
every schooling day. During this recent interview session done at Wisma Smart
Reader®, Lean happily sang two songs, “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Goyang-Goyang” to
show her talent and interest in singing.
Being a Filipino, Lean does not only speak Tagalog, but also converse well
in English, Mandarin, and Bahasa Malaysia. When asked on how she prepares herself
for school each day, she looked at her mum and explained, “When I wake
up in the morning, I stretch my body, drink milk, brush my teeth, take bath,
put on clothes, wear shoes and go to school.” Lean also had fun counting
the numbers from 1 – 100 during this interview. As she counted the numbers
until 99, she turned and looked at her mum for assurance before saying hundred.
According to Lean’s mum, Teresa Coronel Abungin, Lean is very curious
about her surroundings. She always asks questions if she wants to know or clarify
some things. Besides being confident, friendly and outspoken, she is also very
independent.
“She makes her own timetable for the day. From my observation, she is
disciplined in such a way that she learns to manage her time accordingly. At
home in the evening, she will watch television programmes for a while before
she proceeds to do some homework on her own. At times, when she is doing her
reading, she will create her own storyline and pretend that she is reading it
from the book!” relates Teresa.
“That shows how much she loves and enjoys school”She added that sometimes when she comes home from work, Lean would run to
open the door and sing the Smart Reader Kids®’s Theme Song, “We
Are Smart Reader Kids®’ to welcome her home. “That shows how
much she loves and enjoys school,” states Teresa.
On her progress in school, Katherine Chang, principal of Smart Reader Kids® Pantai
Hillpark, said that Lean improves tremendously since she first started preschool.
“Already a friendly child, Lean picks up things very fast, especially
through interactive activities. At first, she could hardly speak any languages
other than Tagalog. After two years with Smart Reader Kids®, she can converse
fluently and write properly in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin,” comments
Katherine.
Born in Manila, Phillipines, Lean is brought up in Malaysia, where she has
her first taste of pre-formal education with Smart Reader Kids® Pantai Hillpark.
She does not shy away from talking to people from all walks of life. Her self-confidence
has brought out the best in her, especially her communication skills. Being in
a multi-racial country, she is able to speak the different languages without
any language barrier.
