Learning through Play

It was never an easy task when it comes to parenting. Whether you are a new parent or an experienced one, bringing up a child can put you through different stages and levels of responsibilities, patience and commitment. But all in all, being a parent, you just want to provide the best for your child in every way. Hence, an early exposure to a fun interactive learning environment will definitely help in preparing your child for a brighter and promising future.

Smart Reader Kids Junior® has a specially designed programme in providing quality educational experience and care for toddlers aging 15 months to 3 years old. Mrs Onna Chang, a full-time housewife and mother to a pair of 3-year old twins, Brain and Megan Chang, who registered with Smart Reader Kids Junior® (Damansara Heights) programme for almost 2 years, shared some of her views and experiences on early childhood development and preschool education.

“At such a young age, it is important for toddlers to enjoy their childhood without feeling the unnecessary pressure from their parents. Learning through play is the best way for children to have fun and enjoy learning at the same time. While the children are comfortable mingling around with others and love their learning environment, they can absorb knowledge easily and are able to express themselves better. The best part is that they don’t even know that they are actually learning while playing!” said Onna, who is happy with her children’s progress and achievements at an early age.

Onna believes that children should be given the opportunity to start learning the essential values and appropriate behaviours as early as 15 months. She said that an early exposure to social interactions and nursery education help in building up the children’s positive characters and disciplining them since young. According to her, positive values such as being independent, confident, sociable, expressive, discipline and manners are things that children learn from the centre.

“Though early home education is important for children, there is always an advantage of sending them to a child enrichment centre or nursery at such young age. Children are exposed to the most effective and systematic ways of learning. Most importantly, these kids are in good hands and are able to interact with other children in the centre. An early taste of pre-schooling will help to develop these young brains and train them to take care of themselves,” explained Onna, who spent a day at Smart Reader Kids Junior® Damansara Heights with her children to observe the fun of learning through play with other children before she made the decision to enrol her children at the centre.

Onna thinks that mothers tend be overprotective when it comes to matters related to the well being of their children. However, she expressed that there is a need for the children to learn to be independent and to be able to discipline themselves. She said that when there are moral values, they will definitely strive to excel academically.

“It is a wonderful thing when you see your children bring back the knowledge from school and practise them at home. Brian can put butter on his bread all by himself while Megan will always make sure that the clothing she wears is neat and tidy. Both of them now can interact well with one and another at home using English,” relates Onna.

"It is a wonderful thing when you see your children bring back the knowledge from school and practise them at home"According to Mrs Singh, principal of Smart Reader Kids Junior® Damansara Heights, children nowadays are smarter and are learning faster. Hence, they need proper guidance and training to ‘open up’ their little minds.

“I’m very particular when it comes to selection of teachers. We are dealing with children from 15 months to 3 years old. Therefore, the teachers need to possess a very high degree of patience and love for children. Only then, they are able to understand the children’s needs and use the appropriate method to teach them,” expressed Mrs Singh.

When asked on her views on good parenting, Onna explained that there is a crucial need for parents to spend time with their children, not just quality time, but anytime. According to her, even a daily routine of sitting down together to watch television programmes can actually foster the family bond. It is important to talk to the children, treat them like adults and make them understand their roles and responsibilities. She also said that children need to feel their parents’ presence and love, especially in their growing years.
