The Confidence of a Smart Reader Kid

Five-year old Ow Ruo Yu has never fail to miss any stage performances organised by her preschool, Smart Reader Kids® Taipan 2. She just loves being on stage and expresses herself through many different ways, be it singing, dancing, acting, storytelling or public speaking. Being one of the top finalists and Second Runner-up at the recent Smart Reader® Kid of the Year 2005, Ruo Yu does not only outshines her talent on stage, but also further proves her overall performance in knowledge, attitude, responsibility, class participation, social interaction, leadership qualities and academic achievements.

“I feel very nice and happy being on stage,” expressed Ruo Yu as she shares her experiences on stage. She enjoys the limelight being a young entertainer, not to mention winning her deserving trophies in almost all the competitions that she has participated thus far. She even shed tears of happiness the moment she went on stage to receive her Smart Reader® Kid of the Year 2005 – Second Runner-Up Award. During the competition, she told a story entitled, ‘The Lion and the Mouse’ and sang the tune of ‘Do Re Mi.’ Her facial expression and body language complimented her style of telling the story. Her talent and confidence on stage was also creatively displayed during her song and dance routine that afternoon.

Surprisingly, at her age, she loves watching Science Fiction movies like ‘Anaconda’ and ‘Aliens‘with her parents. According to Ruo Yu, she also enjoys watching her favourite cartoon character, Barbie. She even did a musical dance entitled ‘The Princess and the Pauper’ from the soundtrack, ‘Barbie and Friends,’ during Smart Reader Kids® Talent Search Finals 2005, a month ago, which gained her a third place in the Individual Event Category.

Her parents, Ow Chong Jei and Mary Lok are both proud and impressed with their daughter’s progress and confidence at such an early age.

I’m afraid that she might develop a low self-esteem and become very self-centered. Now, I’m very happy that she is learning positively and actively involved in many activities organised by the schoolAccording to Mary Lok, Ruo Yu’s mother, she is happy with her child’s progress and interest in learning new things. She feels that her daughter learns a lot from school, especially learning to be independent and sharing with others.

“The reason why I got her started with preschool as early as two years old is because I want her to start learning early, mingle around with other kids and learn to share with others. Being the only child in the family, I’m afraid that she might develop a low self-esteem and become very self-centered. Now, I’m very happy that she is learning positively and actively involved in many activities organised by the school,” relates Mary.

Mary also expressed that her child is very curious about things happening around her. “She is always asking me questions whenever she can think of one. So, I always have to stay prepared with the answers. I cannot tell her that I do not know the answers; she’ll never be satisfied and keep on asking me. I believe that the school has much influence on her curiosity of finding out things. I find that it is a good exposure for her as she is able to learn a lot from the school and not afraid of clarifying doubts whenever she does not understand things,” explained Mary.

Ruo Yu’s father, Mr Ow added that his daughter picks up things very quickly once she understands them. “I believe that such exposure is good for her as she is becoming more and more matured and confident in expressing herself. With the support from the school and encouragement from us, her talent develops positively. Being an understanding child, she takes advices from us as guidance in pursuing her own dream,” said Mr Ow.

Like many other children, Ruo Yu loves group activities in-and-out of class where teachers and students have no barriers of communication and children are given ample opportunities to express themselves confidently and creatively through many ways. Smart Reader Kids educators believe that the development of high self-confidence among the kids can be gained through their active participation in class as well as the positive encouragement and recognition shown by the teachers.

When asked on her interests, Ruo Yu said that she likes reading and watching television programmes. Having the ambition of being a doctor, she loves caring for others. She never fails to attend school because she enjoys being in school and meeting her friends. When asked on her favourite teachers, she giggled and named a list of them. “I like all my teachers because they teach me a lot of things,” expressed Ruo Yu, whose favourite subjects are Mathematics and Mandarin. She also said a Chinese phrase that sounds, “Success does not come on its own, but through a lot of hardwork.”
