An Eventful Experience for a Smart Reader Kid

Life has never been more interesting for six-year old, Nasrul Syahirin Bin Mohd Said when he became one of the top 15 finalists vying to be the Smart Reader® Kid of the Year 2005. Starting preschool education with Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Puchong Jaya two years ago, Nasrul does not only outshine his talent on stage, but also further proves himself in knowledge, attitude, responsibility, class participation, social interaction, leadership qualities and academic achievements.

“I was a little happy and a little nervous on stage that day. People started laughing and said I was funny as I put the rabbit (toy) on stage,” confessed Nasrul. As a young entertainer, he enjoys being in the limelight and does not show any nervousness at all. During the competition, he told a story entitled, ‘The Monkey Wants the Moon’ and sang the song ‘You Got a Friend in Me.’ His facial expressions and body language complimented his story-telling style. He exuded talent and confidence on stage when he creatively displayed a song and dance routine that afternoon.

Being an active and cheerful child, Nasrul loves school, his teachers and friends. When asked about his hobbies, Nasrul said that he likes cycling, playing computer games, watching television and spending time with his one-year old sister. Aiming to be a civil engineer, Nasrul excitedly revealed his dream, “I want to build beautiful houses!”

His proud parents, Mohd Said Bin Ibrahim and Norhatimah Md Deni are both happy and impressed with their son’s progress and confidence at such an early age.

“Nasrul has been very outspoken since young. He can talk for hours. He is a very curious child and tends to ask a lot of questions as he is eager to clarify all his doubts. He will only be satisfied until he gets the answers he wants, which is good for him because only by asking, will he learn and gain knowledge,” said Nasrul’s father, Mohd. Said, who often discusses Nasrul’s progress in school with his teachers.

Mohd Said added that his son only took three days to prepare himself for the competition. “I was worried that he couldn’t cope with the memorisation of the storyline and lyrics in such a short period of time. But, after flipping through the pages a couple of times, he could remember the lines and started memorising them. I didn’t even have to prompt him,” recalled Mohd Said. He also said that the Smart Reader® Creative Teaching Methodology has further developed his son’s confidence, language proficiency and thinking skills.

Nasrul’s mother, Norhatimah said, he will always come and talk to her in the kitchen when she is cooking. He asks a lot of questions and tells her what he has learnt in school. At times, he even corrects his mum’s English when she talks.

“Yes, I teach my mum at home. I told her that she cannot use the diesel oil for her car because it’s not petrol,”“Yes, I teach my mum at home. I told her that she cannot use the diesel oil for her car because it’s not petrol,” interrupted Nasrul, as his mum was relating stories about him. Nasrul’s parents explain the importance of both the English and Bahasa Melayu languages at home. His mum speaks to him in Bahasa Melayu while his dad converses with him in English. It was no wonder then that Nasrul could speak both languages fluently during the interview session.

According to Anna Manaf, principal of Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Puchong Jaya, Nasrul is very inquisitive and friendly. “I have observed that his positive character develops further when he learns to help, share and care for others in the school. Whenever the teachers require assistance, he will always volunteer to help. He is also a fast learner and can adapt to changes almost immediately. That is the reason why he doesn’t need to memorise a lot for stage presentations. He understands the storyline, does a bit of changes here and there (but the moral of the story stays) and accurately coordinates his speech with expressions and body language,” explained Anna.

When Nasrul was asked to sing a song during the interview, he excitedly asked, “Which songs do you want me to sing?” After thinking for some time, he finally settled with his favourite, “Tanggal 31.”
