HAVING THE RIGHT ANSWERS FOR A BETTER EDUCATION

It is that time of year again when parents start pre-school hunting for their young ones. What should parents look for in a pre-school? This is a question many parents ask themselves and very few of them actually find an answer.

“I have expectations for my child, for instance, I expect her to be able to read and write well by the age of five,” explains Dr. Kamal Ismail. His daughters, Nur Fatihah (six years) and Nurul Aiman (five years) attend Smart Reader Kids® Bukit Rimau, Shah Alam.

Dr. kamal explained his daughters did attend kindergarten from the age of three however, he did not see any visible progress. He was getting very worried as his eldest daughter was going to enter primary school the following year. At the old kindergarten, Fatihah had memorised the ‘ABC’ song without recognising the letters.

“I was very worried that she would be left behind,” Dr. Kamal states. Dr. Kamal explained that he sourced at many places looking for a pre-school that would be able to help his daughters catch-up academically.

“I tried many places, some of them just concentrated only at one area, for instance just on languages or just on mathematics. I wanted a more wholesome education for my daughter,” he says. Finally, Dr. Kamal heard form a friend about Smart Reader Kids® and enrolled his daughters at the Smart Reader Kids® centre closest to his home.

“When Fatihah first came to the centre, it was difficult for us as she could not understand simple instructions,” explains Norshida bt. Kamaruddin, the principal of Smart Reader Kids® Bukit Rimau, Shah Alam.

“Within seven to eight months he was an ardent reader,” Norshida says proudly.Dr. Kamal, attached to the Malaysian Army, had to move around a lot therefore; Fatihah and her sister could not grow attached to one place. They found it difficult to make friends.

According to Norshida, Fatihah only took six months to warm up to the environment. She started getting comfortable and caught-up academically really fast. Now, not only can she recognise all the letters, she reads well too.

Mohd. Azam Izmier (6 years), is another student at Smart Reader Kids® bukit Rimau. “Azam, is a unique child for us, as when he joined our centre he refused to speak at all,” states Norshida.

Mohd Azam’s father, En. Faisal Rohban Ahmad explained that Azam would never speak to anyone outside the home. Azam would use sign language to communicate.

“Something must have happened in the last school that he attended, something unpleasant that shut him up completely and made him retreat into his own world”, explains Norshida.

En. Fiasal expressed his gratitude to the teachers at the centre, he explained that the teachers were very supportive. They went the extra mile to ensure Azam was progressing with his work.

“The teachers used to come to my house at night to monitor his reading as he would refuse to read aloud at the centre,” claims En. Faisal.

After seeing the teachers in the safety of his own home he warmed up to them and slowly started speaking a bit more at the centre. “Within seven to eight months he was an ardent reader,” Norshida says proudly. En. Faisal continued by saying that Azam started reading everything in sight, he would come home and spend hours with a book.

“He comes home and starts doing his homework right away,” Azam’s father explains. En. Faisal is very happy with his son’s progress, as he too was afraid for his son. He was afraid that he would be teased when he enters primary school and also that Azam would be left behind in the class.

En. Faisal and Dr. Kamal, both being very concerned parents are now at ease. They feel grateful that their children are moving in the right direction. They also feel secure that there will always be someone to guide their children in the right direction. Both these fathers have come out victorious in the quest in finding the right pre-school for their children.
