Instilling the Right Attitude from Young

A good behaviour can be cultivated if given proper guidance, understanding and environment. Behaviour is always deemed as a result of social interaction. We can never deny the fact that a child’s personality development is influenced by his or her social setting. Introducing them to early childhood education from a very young age will facilitate their learning interest and instil in them the positive traits as they grow.

Helping a child to adjust and adapt to different surroundings can be tedious, especially when it comes to an overly active child. However, with much care, attention, patience and understanding, Thomas Lim Zi Hong, three, is able to progress well with Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Sri Permaisuri merely after two months of joining the Centre. Now, after months of being with the preschool programme, Thomas can read and communicate well and is always looking forward to attend school.

“Before he started with Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Sri Permaisuri, he did not want to communicate or express himself and had difficulty in paying attention and following instructions. We are amazed by his rapid development with Smart Reader Kids® just within two months. Most importantly, he concentrates better now and is more confident in speaking, reading, as well as listening,” expressed Thomas’s dad, Lim Kok-Chuan, who is thankful and happy with the Centre’s conducive environment that helps his child’s development in every way.

As for six-year old, Christian Ee, preschool has not been so interesting and enjoyable until he joined Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Sri Permaisuri. He used to be very reserved and poor in reading. His mum, Cheong Wai Kuen, started to worry about his progress as he will be going to Primary One soon. When she found out about the Smart Reader Kids® programme, she made a decision to enrol Christian and observe his development.

“As Christian is more of a silent-observer, he needs a school that can coach him to be more confident and independent. What matters most is he must be willing to attend school everyday and enjoy learning. With Smart Reader Kids® programme, not only that Christian’s reading and writing skills improve tremendously, but also his social skills and interest in learning. I believe that he learns better with the professional assistance from the team of dedicated teachers, who spend ample of time and attention to guide the children in the Centre,” explained Cheong, who feels that children should enjoy what they are doing as they learn.

Cheong added that there is a strong bond between the teachers and children in the Centre that allow the kids to express themselves confidently and enjoy their childhood years. This is especially important in helping the children to develop their capabilities and realise their potentials.

In writing skills, Eunice stresses on teaching children the accurate way of writing each letter in accordance to their strokes rather than just getting the right letter. To Eunice Tan, principal of Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Sri Permaisuri, it is the structured programme and learning that has helped her young students to overcome obstacles that come their way. According to her, it is the Smart Reader® Creative Teaching Methodology that ensures the children’s cognitive and mental development as well as their social abilities and moral values.

“The Smart Reader Kids® programme is a very structured programme, which emphasises on the usage of phonetics, creative teaching aids, interaction and games in the lessons. For example, I make use of the mural in the Centre with alphabet painting to help the children recognise the letters and enhance their vocabulary skills. I will tell them that we go on a walk together in our ‘little adventure’ as we read and form words from the alphabet along the way. And it actually works on the kids,” relates Eunice, who believes all children are capable to learn and be confident if given the right environment to develop their potentials.

Ahmad Nazrin was one the young talents participated in the “Magical Extravaganza” Concert, a record-breaking event - “Longest Performance by Children” which was recorded in the Malaysia Book of Records last year. His talent and confidence on stage was displayed during his Bunny dance routine in the musical play of ‘Alice in the Wonderland.’

In writing skills, Eunice stresses on teaching children the accurate way of writing each letter in accordance to their strokes rather than just getting the right letter. Furthermore, Eunice concentrates on instilling the positive attitude and developing the right character in each child

“When Thomas first came, he could not sit still and used to hide himself under the table. He never wanted to wear socks and shoes when he came to school. Now, he willingly puts on and takes off his socks and shoes on his own. He is also able to follow instructions, mingle with other children, sit down quietly and finish his meal. This is all about setting the right attitude. As for Christian, he could not recognise the letters of the alphabet when he first joined. With much guidance, he now uses the dictionary to check on the words,” revealed Eunice. When she asked Christian how to write the big “Q,” Christian answered immediately, “Big Q, is a big fat cat with a tail.”

In Kindercooking class, Eunice applies ‘logical test’ in teaching her students, a simple task like mixing juices with water in a container to determine the sweetness.

“I believe the practice of moral values should start from young. In today’s society, it is always a challenge to nurture our children and make sure they are in the right track. I feel that being a child educator, I have a role to play in educating our future generation by spreading the positive ideology to the children and parents,” said Eunice.
