Six-year
olds, Low Xian Jun and Maziah Bt Azmi might be two completely different individuals
coming from two different backgrounds and up-bringing. But they do have some
things in common. They share a three-year friendship since attending the same
preschool at Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Sungai Long.
Both of them enjoy school and love to learn. They are bubbly, talkative, and
confident. All these traits can be seen during an interview session done recently
at Wisma Smart Reader®.
Together with their principal of Smart Reader Kids® Bandar
Sungai Long, Ms Lee Poh Wan, both the children shared
their three years preschool fun learning experience
in the Smart Reader Kids® centre during
the interview.
“I love everything about school,” replied
Xian Jun, when he was asked on what he likes about
school. As the elder one of two in the family, Xian
Jun portrays maturity and confidence in his speech
as well as his behaviour. Being able to converse well
in English, Bahasa Melayu and Mandarin, Xian Jun does
not face any difficulty interacting with the other
children in class. In fact, he is very outspoken and
expressive.
According to Ms Lee, Xian Jun came from a non-English
speaking background, and used only Mandarin at home.
Since attending preschool, he started speaking English
at home.
“His mum said that he even teaches her to speak
English in the house. Xian Jun would relate his stories
in English and explain the meanings in Mandarin when
he talked to his mum,” said Ms. Lee.
Ms. Lee added that Xian Jun also helps around in
the house, such as cooking and washing. He willingly
assumed responsibilities at home as an independent
and helpful son. Xian Jun also states that he loves
reading storybooks and writing simple sentences whenever
he has the free time. When asked about his favourite
story, he shyly answered that it has to be “Power
Puff Girls.” He giggled as he talked about the
story on how the ‘three girls’ fight those
nasty culprits in the name of justice.
Maziah on the other hand, likes to mingle around with
her friends in school as they learn and play at the
same time. She loves creative play lessons as she gets
to have fun with her friends as they learn about their
surroundings.
"Xian Jun would relate his
stories in English and explain the meanings in Mandarin
when he talked to his mum"
“I love the hoops and balls. I also like to
use the computer,” said Maziah when she was asked
on what she likes to do in school. At home, she enjoys
watching educational television programmes, such as
Sesame Street and Swan Lake during weekends.
Unlike Xian Jun, Maziah only learn Mandarin in school.
Since she started Mandarin at Smart
Reader Kids®, she is fond of the subject
and finds it interesting. She can pronounce Chinese
words accurately as she speaks a few words in Mandarin.
She even sang the Mandarin version of “Twinkle-twinkle
Little Stars” during the interview session.
Both Xian Jun and Maziah participated in the “Magical
Extravaganza” Concert 2004, a record-breaking
event – “Longest Performance by Children” which
was recorded in the Malaysia Book of Records last November.
They played prominent roles in the story of The Missing
Princesses in Fairyland – a musical stage play
performed by students of Smart Reader Kids® Bandar
Sungai Long.
“Xian Jun played the role of the tree fairy,
while Maziah was the flower fairy,” said Ms Lee.
