What
is more important to parents than to see their children performing and achieving
their best in realising their own dreams? Nothing can be compared to the satisfaction
when you see your own child up on stage receiving their graduation scrolls
and gaining their own recognition in society one day. All individuals’ achievements
begin with the very first step of gaining a strong foundation to face future
challenges. This very first stage is now popularly known as Early Childhood
Education.
Children at their preschool years might not be able
to understand the importance of early childhood education.
However, we can help them to value this crucial stage
of education by allowing them to learn and play at
the same time. This effort is to help instill their
learning interest as the learning process takes place.
Nabeel Kamarul Bahren, 6, is one of the many Smart
Reader Kids® students who enjoy learning
as much as they enjoy playing. Being with Smart
Reader Kids® Desa Sri Hartamas for more
than 3 years, Nabeel has been a very active participant
in classroom activities as well as other extra-curricular
activities organised by the centre. In spite of his
humble character, he has a pleasant personality that
shows his friendliness and confidence when interacting
with others. His interpersonal skill was obviously
shown during this interview session, as he was able
to express his thoughts well in words using English.
“My favourite subjects in school are Science
and Mathematics. In science class, we learn about body
parts and animals. During Mathematics lessons, we learn
numbers and do calculations,” said Nabeel when
he was asked to talk about his favourite subjects.
Besides being able to speak fluent English and Bahasa
Melayu, Nabeel is also able to speak and sing a few
songs in Mandarin. He even sang the “numbers
song” in Mandarin during the interview when his
mother asked him to sing the Mandarin song that he
learned in school.
According to Nabeel’s mum, Puan Noorzanah Zainal,
the Smart Reader® Creative
Teaching Methodology used at all Smart
Reader Kids® centres provide a lot of opportunities
and exposures for her son to be able to express himself
confidently and creatively. She explained that this
method of teaching and learning has encouraged her
son to develop a sense of self worth and build up his
social skills.
“I believe that children
can perform at their best with the proper guidance
and environment given to them"
“I believe that children can perform at their
best with the proper guidance and environment given
to them. An early start in education will help disciplining
them and encouraging them to practise what they learn
in school from young. Most importantly, they are willing
to learn continuously after the initial stage,” said
Puan Noorzanah. Nabeel was one of the Smart
Reader Kids® of the Year 2004 finalists,
who has been selected to take part in last year’s Smart
Reader Kids® of the Year and Talent Search
Contest (Individual Event 5 – 6 years old). His
performance that night was a story telling session
where he amused the audience with his story entitled “The
Monkey and The Moon.” Dressed in a monkey costume,
his facial expressions and body language complimented
his style of telling the story. Nabeel’s story-telling
skill has also gained him the top place in the TV3’s
Carnival story-telling competition. Nabeel also participated
in the “Magical Extravaganza” Concert 2004,
a record-breaking event - “Longest Performance
by Children” which was recorded in the Malaysia
Book Of Records last November. He narrated the story
of Alice in the Wonderland - a stage play performed
by students of Smart Reader Kids® Desa
Sri Hartamas. His talent and confidence on stage
was also creatively and confidently displayed during
his Ali Baba dance routine, which he performed later
that evening. Smart Reader® has
recently launched its very own ‘Smart’ Bacaan
programme as a move to introduce and provide a comprehensive
and systematic Bahasa Melayu reading programme. This
programme, which uses the phonic method, is arranged
into 6 different levels to match the children’s
different levels of understanding, learning, and development
of the language. Similar to the Smart
Reader® English programme, ‘Smart’ Bacaan
also adopts the Smart Reader® Creative
Teaching Methodology to ensure the young students understand
lessons better and at the same time, enjoy the programme.
The main objective of the ‘Smart’ Bacaan
programme is to enhance the children’s reading
skill, vocabulary and their understanding of words,
sentences and texts in Bahasa Melayu.
