Smart Reader Kid of the Year 2004

Smart Reader Kid of the Year 2004 When we were children there were many things that we wanted to experience but most may have not gotten the opportunity. Most parents today try their best to provide an all rounded experience for their children.

A good example would be Mr. Adrian Chiam Yah Han and Mrs. Jane Foong Choy Hwa. Their daughter, six year old Adelene Chiam, recently was crowned Smart Reader Kid of the Year. As most parents would agree that a lot of hard work is necessary when bringing up a well rounded child.

An interview was conducted with her parents to find out what is involved in bringing up a child in today’s world.

Q: What do you think is an important criteria in bringing up a child?
Mrs. C: It is important for your children to be able to confide in you, this is extremely crucial as only then you would be able to win their trust.

Q:How important do you think education is?
Mr. C: Very important indeed. However, education needs to be coupled with the right kind of attitude and values.

Q:Would you consider yourselves strict parents?
Mr. C: Yes and no
Mrs. C: We are not exactly strict parents but parents must always be in control. I have developed a timetable for all of my children I make sure that they follow it. For example, they (children) only watch television during the weekends, I try not to let them get addicted to the television and I monitor what is watched.

Q: Do you believe in the phrase “ Spare the rod and spoil the child”.
Mr. C: We believe in communicative discipline and we hardly use physical force. We talk to the children and they will understand.
Mrs C: We reinforce what we expect from the children all the time. When reading the newspapers and if I come across any stories about children misbehaving, I let my children know what happened and why the child (in the newspaper) was wrong. This way they know what is expected out of them.

Q: What is your opinion on the education Adelene is receiving at Smart Reader Kids®
Mr. C:We are very happy how Adelene is progressing. The Smart Reader Kids® programme provides the all rounded education that is essential for her future. The programme is systematic and well organised.
Mrs. C: Adelene is very happy to go to school every morning, she likes all her teachers, and they are very caring.
Adelene: And pretty (She smiles)
Mrs C: They are all very pleasant at the centre.

Q: What do you like to do in your free time Adelene?
Adelene: I like to read, I love reading books.

Q: Can you tell me the name of your school?
Adelene: Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Sri Damansara.

Q: Do you like going to school?
Adelene: Going to school every morning makes me happy. Even when I am sick and my daddy says its okay I don’t have to go to school I still want to go to school.

Q: What is your favourite subject?
Adelene: I like English very much.

Q: Adelene, can you tell me how it felt like when you won the Smart Reader Kid of the Year contest?
Adelene: I was Happy!
