The
human brain is like a sponge, which absorbs nearly everything in its surroundings,
therefore where children are concerned, it is important to ensure that whatever
is absorbed is healthy for the mind. Today, there are a lot of negative stimulus
in the environment and parents are not always around to filter the kind of information
that is exposed to the child.
As parents are involved in the rat race-the fight against time, their children
are sometimes caught in the middle. “Leaving a child with elderly relatives
or the maids, may seem convenient however, it jeopardises the child’s development,
as the child will not be receiving the appropriate stimulus,” explains
Puan Noor Laila Yahaya.
Noor Laila, is the mother of two and a half year old Aysar Marzuqi Kamaruzzaman,
stresses that it is important for parents and care givers to be able to have
constant watch on what the child is being exposed to.
“This is one of the reasons that I enrolled my son at Smart Reader Kids
Junior®” states Laila. Laila explains further by saying that she was
not happy that her children spent the whole day in front of the television. Although
she knew that they (her children) were watching only cartoons, she was still
not happy. “Some of the cartoons are not appropriate as well, I have noticed
many cartoons with negative connotations,” she says.
At first Laila was skeptical about sending older daughter, Aysar’s sister
to Smart Reader Kids Junior®
“ I had to really think about sending my daughter to Smart Reader Kids
Junior® as my daughter was the first to attend the centre before Aysar. My
husband was against it at first and I had to convince him by saying that we will
try it out for awhile and then decide,” she explained.
After a few months her progress was really good and just as Aysar, she became
more sociable and well behaved. I noticed that Aysar has developed tremendously
since coming to the centre. “His grandparents too has seen the progress,
when we ‘balik kampung’ during the festive season, his grandparents
have commented that he (Aysar) is very sociable and mature for his age.
Laila emphasised that she is very happy that the Smart Reader Kids Junior® centre
pay a lot of attention on discipline, she noticed that Aysar is more disciplined
than other children his age and his ability to follow instructions is good as
well.
Aysar has picked-up the English Language quite well. Laila explained that
she is happy that all the teachers at the Smart Reader Kids Junior® speak
well structured English, this way children will be able to use proper grammar
from a young age. Laila continued by saying that her older children came home
with colloquial English that upset their grammar and she had a hard time correcting
them.
Mrs. Harbans Kaur, better known as Mrs. Singh, the principal of Smart Reader
Kids Junior®, Damansara Heights, explained that the teachers at her centre
are trained to communicate to the children when they (the children) do something
wrong. “We do not believe in punishment, or any other negative reinforcement,” she
explains.
Laila says that she was very pleased that the teachers are honest with her,
if Aysar had done something naughty, she was told about it further more, if there
is any kind of problem at all, she will be aware of it. According to her, honesty
is very important to her because some teachers from other schools often just
tell you that your child “was a good boy/girl today.” “Some
of them are so business minded that in a way they feel that bad feed back towards
the child will result in the parent removing the child from the school. I personally
feel it is important for the parents to know the truth, only then we can correct
them at home,” she adds.
I personally feel it is important for the parents
to know the truth, only then we can correct them at homeTo cater to all parents needs, Smart Reader Kids Junior® has designed
other programmes that will be useful to parents who are not comfortable in sending
their child to school Monday through Friday.
The ‘ 2 Days fun’ programme allows the flexibility of parents,
here, parents can choose two days in the week to expose their children to constructive
play, and enhance his/her social skills. If the two day programme is too short,
the ‘3 Days Play’ programme, will allow the children a little more
exposure, the three days are divided to two days fun play and one day Smart Maths,
where the child will get an early start in Mathematics.
Smart Reader Kids Junior®, incorporates the Smart Reader® Creative
Teaching Methodology into the fun and play sessions at the centre.
