No two individuals are the same, different people react
differently to their environment. Children are even more sensitive to their environment
as everything around them are absorbed instantly. Each child has his/her own
way of processing information that is given. How do we, adults actually handle
this?
Most educators, parents or ‘grown ups’ in general tend to force
children to see things their way. As it may be beneficial for some children,
a majority of children, who are forced into accepting things that they don’t
understand, will build a wall around themselves.
“Each child learn differently, and as educators, we need to identify
which approach is best for the child,” explains Ms. Jen Loke, principal
of Smart Reader Kids® Bandar Tun Hussein Onn.
A good example she says would be siblings; Ku Anis Sofia and Ku Arief Safwan. “Anis
is more of a ‘linguistic learner’ whereas Safwan is more of a audiovisual
learner. Therefore I relate to them differently” Jen explains.
Their parents, Ku Ibrahim bin Ku Mohamad and Rohaizah bt. Ibrahim, also agreed
that both their children respond to different kind of teaching approaches.
For example, Jen explains that Anis is a confident child, she speaks well
and has a lot of confidence in front of people. On the other hand, Safwan is
a more reserved person and is shy in front of a crowd, he is also more active,
and hence he will need more patience given to him during lessons.
“ As Anis, is a ‘linguistic learner,’ I use a lot of creative
word play with her as linguistic learners are more word oriented. On the other
hand, a lot of pictures and actions are used for Safwan as he is more of a audiovisual
learner,” Jen explains.
According to Jen, both children display a lot of interest in what is being taught. “Anis
picks-up words very fast and sometimes she writes them down to take it to school
to ask her teachers,” explains En. Ku Ibrahim.
En. Ku Ibrahim explains that Anis and Safwan have both picked-up a lot of
words from their school. As Bahasa Malaysia is the common language at home, it
is really nice to know that both his children have picked-up the English Language
quite well. He is also happy that the school also organises Public Speaking sessions, “Anis
really enjoys these sessions as she looks forward to it,” he smiles. “From
just picking up words, they are forming sentences now,” he adds.
According to Ku Ibrahim, the Smart Reader Kids® centre also provides the
avenue for the children to express themselves.
“Anis loves to sing and dance, and at the centre she is taught various
songs which she will then come home and practise,” explains Pn.Rohaizah
bt. Ibrahim, Anis and Safwan’s Mother.
“It was difficult to find a good school for Safwan as his activeness
declared him naughty, other educators were not properly trained in handling him.
I am very happy that we found Smart Reader Kids®, they are both very happy,” explains
Ku Ibrahim.
It was difficult to find a good school for Safwan
as his activeness declared him naughty, other educators were not properly trained
in handling himJen explained that the teachers are trained by Smart Reader® Worldwide
in many aspects of childcare and development.
“We are taught to identify the various types of problems that children
encounter, in Safwan’s case he just gets bored fast and it is up to us
teachers to ensure that the attention of the child is captured. For Safwan, you
will have to let him know that you are giving him your undivided attention and
you in return will have all of his attention. In order to do this, you will have
to sit close to him and speak to him directly and he will respond,” she
explains.
The Smart Reader® Creative Methodology helps the students open-up and
see things in a different light. The creative teaching aids used help the students
manifest their imagination and further instigate the thinking process. The method
has been tested and proven effective for all children.
